{"id":5798,"date":"2023-02-20T13:14:08","date_gmt":"2023-02-20T12:14:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/barcelone.centre-pensees.com\/?p=5798"},"modified":"2023-02-21T22:00:08","modified_gmt":"2023-02-21T21:00:08","slug":"ruminations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/barcelone.centre-pensees.com\/en\/les-ruminations\/","title":{"rendered":"Ruminations"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">What is rumination?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A rumination is a repetitive thought about oneself, about past negative events,<br \/>\nand unsolved problems.<br \/>\nIt's a natural process that affects everyone. However, when ruminations are<br \/>\nor dysfunctional (as we will see later) they can lead to<br \/>\nlow morale, depressed mood, anxiety and psychological distress.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">\"Stop brooding, it's useless!\"<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Like all behavior, ruminations have functions that must be distinguished from their content.<br \/>\nof ruminations. Studies have highlighted 2 main functions of ruminations:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>1) Rumination as an attempt at avoidance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Rumination can act as an attempt to avoid acting or coping, for example:<br \/>\nto avoid planning an action, to avoid the risk of failure or humiliation, to avoid<br \/>\nchallenges at work, avoid unpleasant thoughts, avoid confronting<br \/>\nour emotions ...<br \/>\nBut by avoiding these situations, you can't come into contact with new information.<br \/>\nthat can invalidate our fears, nor in direct contact with a problem. We therefore have no<br \/>\nand ultimately reduce the number of enjoyable activities!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>2) Rumination can be a learned habit<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Rumination may once have helped us cope with a situation. Since then, we've continued<br \/>\nto ruminate, because we've learned that it can help us and we've got into the habit of doing it.<br \/>\nCertain beliefs about rumination are then put in place: \"Thinking intensely<br \/>\nis the best way to solve problems\", \"Rehashing problems helps to<br \/>\nunderstanding\", \"Thinking intensely helps us to know ourselves\", \"Reflecting on the reasons for our<br \/>\nfeelings help to overcome them\" ... And you can't get rid of them.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">Only one type of rumination?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As we said earlier, everyone ruminates! It's the frequency and content of<br \/>\nour ruminations, which will determine whether or not they are suitable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ruminations are a <em>normal process<\/em> if ...<br \/>\n- is an attempt to make sense of negative events or to solve a problem.<br \/>\nproblem ;<br \/>\n- there's a balance between thought and action.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ruminations become <em>dysfunctional<\/em> when ...<br \/>\n- it's a never-ending cycle with no resolution;<br \/>\n- there's an imbalance where we spend more time thinking than acting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To illustrate our point, let's take a common example:<br \/>\n<em>Let's say I'm in a bit of a hurry this morning on my way to work because I have an appointment.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>important first thing in the morning. But when I get into my car, it won't start...<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If my ruminations are non-functional, abstract, they will be centered on the \"<strong>why<\/strong>\" :<br \/>\n\"Why is this happening to me? Why is this happening today?<br \/>\nWhat will happen if I'm late?\" \"What are the consequences going to be?\" \"Why me?\"<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">If my ruminations are functional, concrete, they will be centered on the \"<strong>how<\/strong>\" :<br \/>\n\"How did this happen?\" \"what's different today?\" \"how to solve the problem?<br \/>\nwhat's wrong with my car?\" \"how can I solve my work problem?\"<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Can you tell the difference? In the 2nd situation, I'm focused on resolving<br \/>\nproblem. It's the way we deal with our ruminations that will change the impact they have on our lives.<br \/>\nthey will have on us.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\">\"I'll never be able to stop brooding and it's ruining my life!\"<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ruminations can have deleterious consequences on mental health and the ability to function.<br \/>\ncause depressive and anxiety disorders. But the good news is that there are<br \/>\nsolutions! In psychotherapy, we can work on ruminations using a number of techniques<br \/>\nmethods and tools.<br \/>\nFor example, we can use self-observation to identify them, to understand their<br \/>\nfunctions and in which contexts they appear.
